Fort McCoy is known as the Total Force Training Center because this installation supports the training and mobilization of reserve and active component military personnel from all branches of America's armed forces. 

Fort McCoy has become the training site of choice for satisfying both individual and collective training requirements.

The Installation's varied terrain, state-of-the-art ranges, new as well as renovated facilities, and extensive support infrastructure, combine to afford our military personnel with an excellent environment in which to develop and sustain the skills necessary for their mission success.

• Wisconsin has four distinct seasons, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and other items if arriving during the winter months: Winter jacket, snow boots, gloves or mittens, winter hats, snow brush and ice scraper. Good tires on your vehicle are a must for driving on winter roads, and if you are coming from a warmer climate, you will most likely need a new battery in your vehicle.
• The median home cost is $206,400 for Monroe County. Apartment & housing monthly rentals range from $550 for studio/efficiencies to $1500 for duplex/single family homes depending on size and condition. Please be aware that for most rental units, utilities are not included.
• Vehicle operators on a DOD installation and operators of government owned vehicles shall not use cell phones unless the vehicle is safely parked or unless they are using a hands-free device. The wearing of any other portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices (except for hand-free cellular phones) while operating a motor vehicle is prohibited.
• The Fort McCoy Child Supervision Policy requires that children age 9 and under not be left to care for themselves on the installation or in military housing at any time. Supervisory requirements for children ages 10 and older are also addressed within this policy. Copies of the policy are available through School Age Services, 502-898-4373.
• Wisconsin has what is known as a primary enforcement seat belt law. A standard or primary enforcement seat belt law allows police to stop and ticket a driver for not wearing a seat belt, just like any other routine traffic violation.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 323 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included.
